theStudio Artist of the Week…

Gidon Bing, Sculptor, New Zealand

We discovered Auckland, New Zealand-based sculptor Gidon Bing through one of Todd Selby’s ever-intriguing photo shoots, showcasing the artist’s studio. What we love about Bing’s work is that his forms and images are specifically inspired by nature and architecture, in particular the architecture of the Czech avante garde of the 1920s.

Bing is a full time painter and sculptor based in Auckland. He has both academic and formal training as a sculptor and has lived and worked in Europe, the Middle East and America. His work has been acquired by collectors in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Bing focuses mainly on modern, bent plywood sculpture and furniture.

The principle materials Bing uses are wood, metal (iron and bronze) and natural paints. He utilizes traditional Japanese wood bending and shaping techniques to achieve his forms.
